“You told me to find out from Jerry if he’d be all right about it.”

“Uh huh,” I repeated, knowing what was coming next.

“He isn’t. All right about it I mean.”

I sighed, having guessed correctly.

“The bastard!” she growled.

Sam giggled.

“Sorry. Shouldn’t have said that in front of you.” Mary drained her glass and Mark filled it again.

“It’s all right, you should hear my dad when he hits his thumb with his hammer.”

Mary sent a brief smile Sam’s way, then said, “Some of the things he…Jerry came out with!” she shuddered.

“I can imagine,” Mark said, raising the pitcher again.

Mary shook her head. “Sadly, you probably can.”

“We won’t go out with you two if it’ll save any unpleasantness. It doesn’t matter,” I said.

“It does matter, and there’ll be no going out for any of us. I’ve dumped the lowlife, rat-faced, slimy bastard.”

“That’s a bit drastic.” I took one of her hands and gave it a squeeze.
