Chapter 54

“We’ll pay half of the cost,” I insisted.

Tom said they were getting the car anyway, but Mark and I stuck to our guns. Eventually we agreed that they would pay for the car while Mark and I bought whatever petrol we’d need. I still thought we were getting off lightly, but this was a holiday and I didn’t want to make a fuss.

Peter announced the car hire rep would be in reception in a couple of hours, so we decided that once the presentation was over we’d go for a walk until then.

Peter eventually wound down. He knew his stuff, I had to give him that, but I wasn’t convinced camping it up helped his performance.

“Believe me,” Tom began once we were outside and heading for the path that ran along the edge of the beach, “I’m all for live and let live, but Peter is a bit much.”

“I agree,” Mark said. “Trouble is, the straights think we’re all like him.”
