“That’s why I didn’t come to the party tonight.” Brendan was continuing. “Too obvious me showin’ up when we hadn’t played against each other. And that’s why I haven’t called or why I made sure the parking lot was empty before I came up to you. Of course I care.”
Adam turned and looked at the man. He was still staring out into the darkness, his handsome jaw set.
“What do you want, Brendan?”
“You,” Brendan said, turning to look at Adam, his face full of longing and expectation.
Adam felt his resistance wane, and opened the door on the driver’s side of the car. Pointing to the opposite side, he said, “Get in.”
They drove in silence for several miles, Brendan’s hand resting on Adam’s thigh. It felt good to have it there, almost natural. Adam turned and looked over at his passenger. Brendan turned to face Adam and smiled at him, Adam returning the smile.
