My eyes filled with tears as I reached the end of the letter, where he had signed his initials instead of his name to get past the censors: two T’s twined together below the words, I miss you…I didn’t want it to end. So I reread it once, twice, three times before Bert came into the tent and told me the mess was open for dinner. I folded the letter up carefully, tucked it back into the envelope, and laid it beneath my pillow for safekeeping.

The next day I was skipped over during mail call and I reread his letter again.
