Chapter 9

Here.

I remembered the few days we had spent together when we first met. Already my mind was trying to work out how to get Bert out of our tent long enough to lay Tommy down in my bed, cover him in hungry kisses, and make love to him over and over again. “You’re shitting me.”

Bert shook his head, a self-satisfied smirk on his face.

I still didn’t believe him. “How do you know this?”

“I was in the comm tent.” Bert meant communications, where an operator manned the radio, our only link to the other units and the rest of the world. “You know that major over in the 4077? Older woman, nice breasts?” I didn’t but nodded anyway, just to hurry the story along. “I thought maybe I could get Earl to let me use the radio, just call over there and say hi, see if she was free Friday—”

“Bert!” I cried.

He shrugged. “I don’t have a girl lined up for Friday yet.”

I sighed, exasperated. “Get to the part about my boy already, will you?”
