Chapter 36

“Adam,” Trace sighs, rubbing a hand along Janie’s back. “That song is so us, youknow that.”

“It’s overdone.” Adam looks at Paul, a beseeching appeal in his eyes. “That was our first song and I’m so sick of it, you just don’t understand.”

From against the door, Lewis finally speaks. “If it’s as good as they say it is, you’ll do it.”

Adam glares at him and Paul can see his jaw clench. Don’t,he prays, watching Adam closely. Lewis bristles, waiting for the outburst he thinks is coming.

But despite the tension filling the room, Adam doesn’t say a word. His fingers dig into Paul’s knee until it starts to hurt, so Paul removes his hand. Adam closes his fingers around Paul’s for a brief moment before letting go. “Fine,” he mutters, dropping his gaze. He glowers at the table as he flops back against the futon. “One cover? Is that it?”
