She took a sip, paused for a moment and said, “Très bien.”

He made a little bow and filled everyone’s glass. Two hours later everyone at the table was sated. They’d sampled the p?té and the small cups of French onion soup, the coq au vinhad been so tender that the meat had literally fallen off the bone at the slightest touch of a fork, and the dessert was a mousse au chocolatso light and delicious it was almost impossible to describe. In the car, Tom said, “Mrs. Lane, that was the most amazing meal I have ever had, and I can’t thank you enough for the experience.”

“Ditto,” Noah said.

“I’m glad you boys enjoyed it,” she said.

“The word ‘enjoy’ is scarcely adequate to describe the experience I just had,” Tom said.
