“See you later.”

TOM WENT OVER to the church, retrieved the organ key from the secretary, and sat down to work. He went through all the pieces he had in various stages of preparation several times, then settled down to do some serious work on a composition of his own. He wasn’t exactly writing every note down at this point, merely making broad brush notations on some staff paper. He was using a little recorder to keep track of what he’d done, which would help him fill in the blanks on the page later. Unless, of course, he changed his mind and used another approach.

Satisfied that he’d done enough creating, he settled down to run completely through the piece. When the last note faded away, he was startled to hear applause. Peeking over the top of the console, he saw Mrs. Lane and Noah’s mother sitting in the front pew. They left the pew and walked up to the console.

“What was that you just played?” Mrs. Lane said.
