“No argument there.”

Noah pulled on a knee-length T-shirt, which he sometimes used as a nightshirt in cold weather, and crawled into bed.

“I’ll go back next door and tell your mother you’re settled down for the night. She’ll probably come tuck you in or something.”

“Kiss me first.”

He did so, then he returned next door, where everyone was now in the parlor.

AS SOON AS TOM walked into the room, Noah’s mother said, “Did he make it up the stairs all right?”

“Yes, Ma’am, but it wore him out. He’s in bed, and if you want to say good night you probably don’t have long. I suspect he’ll be sound asleep fairly quickly.”

“In that case,” she said, “if you folks will excuse me, I’ll go next door for a minute.”

When enough time had elapsed for her to be out of earshot, Henry said, “Her attitude toward you, or more particularly you and Noah, seems to have undergone a transformation.”
