Chapter 69

BARBARA AND JONATHAN’S wedding at St. Luke’s Cathedral had been a spectacular affair, and he and Noah had outdone themselves with the music, which had included two solos by Noah. The week before they were to depart for England, Tom met with Father John and two members of the worship committee. He gave John and the others a summary of the planned music for the next several Sundays.

“Everything is under control,” he said, “and the choir has mastered all of the music they’ll be performing. All our organ scholar will have to do is wave his arms until the singing stops. The secretary has a list of substitutes that can be called upon if he gets sick or anything.”

“Don’t worry about a thing,” John said. “All of us are more than comfortable with the young man.”

Heads were nodding in agreement.

“There is one bit of news, however,” John said.

“What’s that?”

“Father Summers has announced his intention to retire at the end of July.”
