“Within ten years the men and boys choir was gone. If you look at the church’s website today, there’s no mention of a choir. The clergy are listed, along with someone whose title is ‘song leader’. That city of just under two hundred thousand now has three Anglican churches where there were none in 1970, one of which is large enough to have achieved cathedral status. The high-church folk voted with their feet—and left the Episcopal church to escape the contagion. The retired organist who told me this had substituted there occasionally in the seventies, and he and one of his sons sang in the men and boys choir when he wasn’t serving in another church.
