Chapter 19

Philip was closing the nursery door as I arrived. “All quiet,” he said. “Both of them are out cold.”

“Good. We have time to shower and dress before breakfast.”

Philip and I were downstairs at the breakfast table sipping coffee when Rob came down and immediately said, “Where’s Jeff? I just looked in his room, and he wasn’t there.”

“Jeff bunked with Steve last night,” Philip said.

Before Rob could respond, Steve and Jeff entered the room, and I said, “Speaking of the devil.”

“Did you two get any sleep last night?” Philip said.

“Yes, but not enough,” Steve said, yawning.

At that moment, Mrs. Goodman appeared with a tray of food, and all conversation ceased. Half an hour later, we were standing in the driveway saying good-bye to our guests.

I said, “Guys, I’m sure Philip has told you this, but I want to reinforce what he said. The two of you are welcome to come visit Steve anytime.”

“Be sure and call Steve to let him know when you get home,” Philip said.
