“I’m glad we did that,” I said. “We sort of got out of the habit after my convalescence, and I’ve missed the regular massages.”

“Yeah, me too,” he said.

“You know, babe, there’s something else we need to talk about.”

“What?”

“Mark and Steven will be walking in a few months, and we can’t keep them confined to the nursery all the time. Sooner or later they’ll figure out how to climb out of their cribs, and from there it won’t be too long before they figure out how to circumvent those childproof doorknobs.”

“I know. What are you driving at?”

“We need to figure out some way to childproof the upstairs. That is, some way to keep toddlers from falling down the stairs.”

“Well, they make all kinds of barriers and gates.”

“True, but if we put a gate across the head of the stairs, how will Sir Lancelot get downstairs to use his doggie door?”

“I hadn’t thought about that.”
