I took them up to the study, where Philip was waiting, and introduced Brian and his cameraman to Philip. Then I played the DVD for them. I gave them a copy of the video; then we went back downstairs to the library, where Brian interviewed me. I pulled no punches in describing the prejudice of the sheriff and his deputies.
When I showed them to the door, Brian said, “This is great stuff, Mr. Barnett. I owe you one.”
As soon as I was back upstairs, I knocked on Steve and Roger’s door and told them that the video would be on the eleven o’clock news. After that, I went to the computer and e-mailed an account of the arrest to my contact at the newspaper, attaching a copy of the video.
I returned to the study, where I found Philip and Gran, glasses of wine in hand. I collapsed on the sofa and said, “Can I ask you to pour me one of those?”
Wordlessly, Philip complied. He also handed me a plate of sandwiches, saying, “We never got around to eating.”
