Philip headed down the hall, and I looked at the boys and said, “Steve, how do your sisters feel about their father?”

“Well, they know how badly he treated Mom, having all those affairs, and they know what he did to me. We haven’t really talked about it, but I don’t think either one of them has much affection for him.”

“Do either of the girls have any really close ties to anyone in your hometown?”

“Each of them has a best friend,” Steve said, “but that’s about it as far as I know. Why?”

“I was thinking that it might be a good idea for your mother to sell the business and relocate.”

“If you mean to Atlanta, she doesn’t particularly like big cities,” Steve said. “On the other hand, she knows a lot of people in Alexandria from visiting Uncle Julien so often.”

“That’s interesting,” I said. “Don’t say anything about this conversation until I’ve had time to talk to Philip.”

“Talk to Philip about what?” Philip said from the doorway.
