“Ever been up that road?” I said. “No.”

“Then let’s check it out.” We drove slowly up the road, and I could tell by the way my ears were popping that we were climbing steadily, despite the ups and downs of the road.

“Look up ahead,” Philip said. “There are two guys jogging up the road with an Irish Setter.”

We cruised slowly by the two men and their dog. I was driving, but Philip turned to look as closely at them as he could while I passed them.

“Definitely family,” he said.

“How can you tell without interacting with them?” I said.

“Body language.”

We reached the top of the mountain and saw a large complex of cabins and buildings. A sign pointed the way to a ski area to our left. I pulled over, and we got out of the Jeep. We walked over to a log at the side of the road and sat for a long while, enjoying the air and the scenery. When the two men and the dog drew abreast of us, we got up and walked over to them.
