It took slightly longer to unload, because all except the two boxes of kitchen stuff had to be carried up to the third floor. I sent them on their way after giving them each a can of Coke and a fifty-dollar bill. They tried to protest the tip, saying that it wasn’t necessary. I told them that if they wouldn’t tell Richard, neither would I, and we let it drop. They’d just left when the telephone rang.
