I said, “Your Honor, I won’t even begin to speculate as to why the district attorney was a guest in the home of a reputed crime figure, let alone why he felt comfortable enough being there to make a long-distance call. That tape, however, places a huge cloud of doubt over the testimony we heard last Friday from Mrs. Treadwell.”

The judge said, “What do you propose doing with this tape, Mr. Barnett?”

“With the court’s permission, I would like to play it for Alice Treadwell. Perhaps it will prompt her to reveal just who put her up to telling her ridiculous story.”
