Chapter 27

When I got to the rehearsal room, I apologized again to Tom Foster for having missed the Thursday rehearsal. “Don’t worry about it,” he said. “I understand that Zeke had a sort of family thing to take care of, and you had to go with him.”

“Yeah. I couldn’t help with the driving, but I managed to keep him awake. He worked from seven till three, and then drove straight to Maggie Valley. By the time we got there, he was wiped out.”

“We’ll give you an extra run-through in a few minutes to make up for Thursday, so don’t worry about it.”

“Thanks.”

As far as I could tell, the music, including my solo, went well. Upstairs in the robing room after the service, several choir members went out of their way to congratulate me, and that meant a great deal. As I was making my way to the stairs, I heard a voice that I didn’t immediately recognize

“We’re going to give you a lift home, Josh,” someone said.
