Chapter 18

“It has crossed my mind, but I usually have too much on my plate to worry about things over which I have no control.”

“Well, for your ears only, there will be no new undersheriff.”

“Really?”

“The sheriff has decided that having an undersheriff isolates him too much from what’s going on in the department.”

“So what’s going to happen?”

“He’s going to revive the title of chief,” he said. “It was before your time, but that rank was phased out way back when the city and county governments were consolidated.”

“And?”

There will be three chiefs appointed. One will head up traffic, one will head up investigations, and the third will handle everything else.”

“Is it too much to hope that you’ll be one of them, preferably the one in charge of criminal investigations?”

“That will be my new job.”

“Then let me be the first to congratulate you,” I said.

“Thanks,” he said. “Now we need to talk about you.”

“Yeah, who’s going to be the new captain? I hope it’s not Meadows.”
