I accompanied the boss upstairs, and we were settled in the conference room about five minutes ahead of time. I’d been curious to learn the identities of the other two lieutenants who were being promoted and was pleasantly surprised to see that I had guessed correctly. One of them was in his early forties, the other was about fifty, and I liked and respected both of them. The sheriff entered the room on the dot of one thirty, followed by his secretary. She bustled about the table, placed a small folder in front of each of us, and left the room. As the door closed behind her, the sheriff said, “Okay, let’s get to work. If you will take a look at the folders in front of you, you’ll find that they contain a detailed outline of the proposed reorganization and its implementation.”
