Chapter 27

Zeb and Zeke left for home the week before Labor Day, as their classes were about to begin. I’d rearranged my weekend off to coincide with the Labor Day weekend, and we took off Friday afternoon on our usual schedule. My team was down to Janet and three of the guys for the weekend, as Carl and Jim were spending a long weekend in Savannah. We were all feeling a sense of frustration over the case, and I took a briefcase full of notes and things, hoping that I could go through the case while in the mountains and have some sort of revelation. The boys met us at the airport and spent the entire trip to the cabin telling us about their first few days of college.

“So,” I said, when they had finally run out of steam, “I guess you like being college men.”

“Oh yeah,” Zeb said. “It’s great so far.”

“Joe and Donnie are there too,” Zeke said.

“Yeah,” Zeb said. “They’ve been acting real friendly, like they want to tell us something, or maybe they want us to tell them something.”
