“This is the first time I haven’t cooked a meal on Thanksgiving Day in years,” Martha said, “and it feels good.”
“What will your family do without you today?” I said.
“One of my two daughters-in-law is cooking for everyone this year.”
“Is she a good cook?” Mike said.
“I’ll deny this if you repeat it, but she’s probably a bit better at it than me.”
“What about the other daughter-in-law?” I said.
“She can barely boil water, poor thing.”
The boys were still excited about being in college, and they talked about their various classes.
“Does your school take a spring break?” I said.
“Yes, Sir,” Zeb said. “We get a whole week off.”
“The beach will be waiting, and so will the guest room, if you want to come to Florida.”
“You know we do,” Zeke said. “Thanks.”
“What about work?” Lucinda said.
“If I ask far enough ahead of time,” Zeb said, “my boss will let me have the time off.”
“So will mine,” Zeke said.
