Deborah began to write, eventually filling two pages with notes. She tore them out of the notebook and handed them to Chris.


“There you go. I’ve listed the stores in order of importance, without regard to where they’re located. You might want to pinpoint them on a map before you start shopping. It’ll save a ton of driving.”


“Thanks a lot,” Chris said. “I really appreciate this.”


The conversation became more general, and after they said good-bye, Chris headed for Publix. He took the bags of groceries home and put them away, then printed out a map and marked the locations of the shops Deborah had listed. By the time he returned home to begin cooking, he had everything he needed in the way of cutlery and other tools.


MICKEY WALKED IN the door that evening and was surprised to find Chris in the kitchen doing things at the stove.


“What’s up with all this?” he said as he gave Chris a hug and kissed him.
