A FEW DAYS AFTER the dinner party, Mitch called to tell Chris that the other side had accepted his counteroffer.
“Does that mean it’s over?” Chris said.
“Not until their check is in our hands.”
“And when will that be?”
“It’s supposed to be on its way by overnight letter. I’ll call you when it gets here.”
Chris got busy taking care of yet another project on the house and put the conversation out of his mind until Mitch called the next afternoon and asked him to come downtown and bring a deposit slip with him.
“I guess that means the check is here.”
“Not only here, but already deposited in our trust account. And, because it’s a government check, our bank graciously decided not to place a hold on it.”
“Bully for your bank. What time should I stop by?”
“Where do you bank?”
“I have an account at VyStar Credit Union. It used to be known as Jax Navy Credit Union.”
“Their main office is out on Blanding Boulevard, right?”
