“You’re welcome, Mr. Bottoms, and I’m glad to see that an order I signed all those years ago bore fruit.”

They followed Mr. Vanderbilt’s wheelchair out of the judge’s office and waited while the secretary made several official copies of the documents. Eventually, she handed the paperwork to Mr. Vanderbilt, who then gave two of the documents to Chris.

“Here’s two certified copies of the adoption,” he said. “If you need more for any reason, your lawyer will know how to order them.”

“Thank you, Sir, and forgive me for asking, but I thought you said that the judge wouldn’t need to see us.”

“That’s usually the case, but he recognized your name and for some reason remembered the case. He wanted to see how things had turned out for you. By the way, I have something else for you in my briefcase.”

The lawyer opened the briefcase that had been sitting on the floor beside his wheelchair and rummaged around in it for a moment.
