“If you’ve accomplished this much in one day,” he said, “do you think you’ll be done in a couple of days?”
“That’s hard to say. I’m following a paper trail, and I have to go where it leads me until I reach a dead end. In any case, I’ll call an end to it Friday and head home.”
“I’ve got a bad feeling about this,” he said.
“Yeah, so do I.”
“Whatever you come up with, it needs to be airtight.”
“Why?”
“Because Ramirez is a close personal friend of the president and CEO of the company. I don’t want to give him any wriggle room when I lay this in front of him.”
“I won’t give you anything in a written report that you can’t take to the bank—or to a judge.”
“I’ll accept that. By the way, you spun a really convincing tale over lunch—I was impressed.”
“Thanks. It wasn’t the first time I’ve assumed that particular role when I was sort of undercover.”
“I have to say, you almost had me ready to ask your advice on real estate.”
