Chapter 20

“Someone will be transferring here from one of the larger stations tomorrow,” the captain said.

“Do you know anything about him?” Ron said.

“I have his name, but I won’t have his file until this evening.”

That evening during dinner, the conversation centered around the events of the day, particularly Monty’s health.

“Why was he using the old-fashioned fireman’s carry?” Ron said.

“Remember how old he is,” the captain said. “That’s the way he was trained, and in an emergency, we revert to what we learned first.”

“Oops,” Ron said.

“I’m glad this topic came up,” the captain said.

“Why?” Ron said.

“Because I’ve got someone coming over to the station tomorrow morning to give each of you a quick checkup, with particular attention to your body mass index. With a couple of exceptions, most of us look pretty fit. But I think it’s time we started doing something in addition to lifting weights.”

“Such as?” Ron said.
