“Whatever do you mean?”

“He hired someone to write his master’s thesis for him.”

“You can’t possibly know that,” she said.

“Of course I can. Who do you think helped him find the ghostwriter?”

“Are you serious?”

“I’m serious as a heart attack.”

“I… I don’t know what to say.”

“There’s nothing to be said, Mom. It’s just the way it is. Come to think of it, you’d think he’d show me a little gratitude. Anyhow, I’m going home. I’ll send Aunt Colleen a note of apology, and thank her for standing up for me in there, but right now, I need to be alone.”

“Think about what you just said about gratitude, Brody.”

“What about it?”

“How many psychology courses did you take in college?”

“Several… oh, you’re saying that needing my help only increased his resentment of me.”

“Bingo.”

“Whatever. I’m headed home.”

“All right, but your sister is going to drive you home.”
