“We
should meet, Curtis. Some time today. I’ll see you by that ice cream shop you
love so much. Expect me.”
He
thought he heard Nick starting another sentence–or was it just the rushing in
his ears?–but he couldn’t listen to any more. He disconnected with a savage
stab of the button. Then stumbled towards Riley’s sink and threw up all the
snacks he’d eaten the night before.PLUCK AND PLAY – 7
Riley
had been startled when Curtis burst back into his living room from the kitchen.
He was still lounging on the sofa but he’d pulled the blanket over his legs,
probably to keep warm. The television was turned onto a local radio station,
though Riley had kept the sound down to a gentle background level. He caught
Curtis’ expression and looked puzzled. So he hadn’t been eavesdropping?
“I’ve
gotta go now.”
Riley
didn’t flinch. He nodded and prepared to lift the blanket off his knees. “Okay.
I’ll get dressed and come–”
“No!”
