Chapter 45

“Mr Reilly?” A

nurse bent down to help him mop up. She conveniently had a supply of paper

towels in her hand. When Patrick stared at her, she gave a rueful smile. “I

know, I’m a real Girl Guide, aren’t I? You’d be amazed how often spillages

happen, so I always carry towels just in case. People sit here for so long they

forget what’s around them.”

Patrick flushed.

“Thank you.”

“You’re waiting for

Mr Lee Campbell?” At Patrick’s eager nod, she put a gentle hand on his

shoulder. “He’ll be fine, but we’ll keep him in overnight.”

“His head—?”

“He’ll be fine,”

she repeated. “Honestly, I’m sure of it. He inhaled some smoke and has a few

scrapes from being knocked across the room. And yes, he caught his head on the

fridge as he fell. It doesn’t look like a heavy blow, there’s little bruising,

but we will keep head wounds in for the night, just in case. He should be

discharged tomorrow after we’ve reviewed the situation.”
