“Well, that went
well,” Bryan said as he returned to the kitchen. His expression showed he meant
that literally, not in the sarcastic way some of the younger members of their
group used it when there’d been a disaster. He glanced at the card in Patrick’s
hand. “Are you okay with the time?”
“Look, Bryan. This won’t work. You said yourself, the painting’s only just finished, and the
decorators still have to hang the light fittings. It’s not a suitable place to
hold a business meeting.”
“It’s not a
business meeting.”
Patrick waited
for more explanation, but it obviously wasn’t forthcoming. “And why on earth
are you inviting me to my own place?”
“Because it
seems the only way to get your undivided attention. The meeting is for your
benefit.”
“Is this some
kind of intervention?” He expected Bryan to laugh and tell him not to be
melodramatic but, to his surprise, Bryan just lifted his eyebrows.
