Chapter 95

Carl was standing on the stoop with an attractive woman who was probably in her late thirties. She looked vaguely Hispanic.

“Hi, Tom,” Carl said. “This is Lieutenant Sanchez. I haven’t heard from Noah’s brother, so we decided to come by and ask Noah to call him.”

“Come on in,” Tom said. “Bobby’s here. He turned up on our doorstep a couple of hours ago. Sorry, but I forgot to tell him to call you.”

He led them into the living room, and Carl introduced his lieutenant to Noah and Bobby. “I apologize for intruding at a time like this,” she said, “but we need to complete our report on last night’s incident, and we like to get information while it’s fresh in people’s minds.”

Carl took out his notebook and made notes while Noah and Bobby answered the lieutenant’s questions.

Finally, she said, “I think that just about wraps it up. Thank you.”

“Carl,” Tom said, “have you heard how our tenant is doing today?”

“The one that got shot?”
