“Good morning, Dr. Cumming,” he said. “I’ll leave the patient with you and go finish my preparations.”
“Thanks, Chris,” Joe, said. “You’ve made me feel a bit better about things.”
“Yeah, me too,” Charley said.
“Just doing my job, guys. See you in the OR.”
“Wait a moment for me, if you will, Chris,” Dr. Cumming said.
“Certainly. I’ll be just outside.”
Chris walked a few steps down the corridor and stood waiting.I wonder what that was about?
Dr. Cumming didn’t waste much time with the patient and appeared in the corridor after a minute or two.
He walked to where Chris was waiting, and said, “Do you usually bond with the patients like that, Chris?”
“No, Sir. Actually, I try very hard not to, but when I saw him lying there terrified, I was instantly reminded of my own experience. It was a sort of déjà vu moment because I was where he was less than a year ago. I know not to get too involved with patients as they come and go.”
