Chapter 16

We all horsed around in the pool for an hour or so before our hosts left the pool and fired up a gas grill situated beside the pool house. In what seemed like no time, we were called out of the pool to partake of burgers, hot dogs, chips, baked beans, and coleslaw, accompanied by beer or wine. We sat around a large glass-topped table enjoying the food and conversation. By the time everyone was on his third drink, or in some cases more, the conversation got a little personal and eventually turned to the subject of my injuries.

“Do you mind if we ask you about your injuries?” Todd said.

Before I could respond, Kevin jumped in. “He doesn’t really like to talk about it, but it’s good for him to do so.”

“Yeah,” I said, rather weakly. “Have at it.”
