KEVIN AND I SPENT the next day doing our best to keep Mrs. Simpson occupied and her mind off of things. He finally asked her if she needed to go to the funeral home to make any arrangements.

“Land sakes, no,” she said. “Your grandpa and I arranged all that years ago. We bought burial policies and put everything down in writing. All I had to do was call old Mr. Laugesen, and he knew exactly what to do.”

“Do you need to go to the store for anything?” he said.

“Nothing that I can think of, why? Do you need something?”

“I was thinking that a bottle of wine might come in handy after the viewing tonight. Do they still sell it at the general store?”

“Yep, but there’s a new Aldi’s just up the road from the general store. They’ll probably have a better selection.”

“Great. Why don’t you come along with us for the ride?”
