Chapter 40

“For the oil change? Nothing. Least I can do to help that nice lady. If you were using the trailer locally I could forget about that too. But since you’re picking it up here and leaving it in Florida, I can’t hide it from the computer. You do know that they add a hefty surcharge for one-way rentals?”

“Yes, Sir, and it’s more if you’re going to Florida than if you’re leaving Florida for elsewhere.”

“Yeah. Too many people heading to Florida. Not enough leaving. They have to load a bunch of trailers on a big truck and haul them back north and west regular-like. Gas tank full?”

“Yes, Sir. We took care of that yesterday on the way back from the funeral.”

I gave him my credit card, and he gave me a receipt. “Thanks a lot,” I said.

“My pleasure. Tell Mrs. Simpson I wish her well.”

“Yes, Sir, I will.”

“By the way, what’s she going to do with her house?”

“You know Caleb, the guy that leases the farm?”

“Sure do.”
