Chapter 45

“I haven’t enjoyed a Thanksgiving gathering this much since I was a girl,” she said.

“No wonder,” I said. “You already know more people here than we do.”

“I’m enjoying mingling with people—it’s been a while since I’ve been able to do that on a regular basis.”

David learned that his brother was spending Christmas with his wife’s family, so we planned to go to Charlotte for Christmas. To our surprise, Grandma eagerly agreed to accompany us. “Provided your mother will let me help her in the kitchen, David,” she said.

The following spring, we sent my mother a round-trip ticket, and she flew to Jacksonville to spend a few days with us. She bunked with Grandma for the three days of her visit, and to our surprise, she made no mention of the fact that David and I shared a bed. She did, however, mention it to Grandma.
