Chapter 55

She picked up another document, glanced at it, and said, “Mr. Majors?”

“Yes, Ma’am,” I said.

“You have an impressive record—both in the military and in school.”

“Thank you, Your Honor,” I said.

“Are you sure you’re ready to take on this responsibility?”

“Yes, Ma’am,” I said. “That little boy needs some stability in his life, and I think, with Grandma’s help, Kevin and I can provide it.”

“So do I,” she said.

Placing the document on her desk, she signed it. She handed the documents to Mr. Perkins and said, “Take these to my clerk, Leroy. I’m sure you’ll want to get some certified copies.”

“Thank you, Your Honor,” he said.

“I wish all of my decisions regarding family matters were this easy,” she said. “Are you folks going back to Florida tonight?”

“Actually,” I said, “we’re flying home by way of Charlotte, so we can introduce Anthony to my parents. We haven’t told them about this yet, so it will come as something of a surprise when they learn that they have another grandson.”
