Chapter 15

I called Janet and asked her to come see me and to bring the team with her, or as many of them as were in the building. I gave them my list of questions and follow-up notes and was pleased to learn that they were already working on at least a third of the things I’d indicated needed doing. A tribute to my training of them, I hoped.

“Okay, gang, here’s the deal,” I said. “I’m as certain as I can be, without actual proof, that this was definitely not a robbery. What I want you to do is follow the money. Who benefitted from the victim’s death and how? Do it very quietly and very discreetly, and for God’s sake, don’t let the press get wind of this line of inquiry, it’s much too early for that.

“Second, the victim’s brother is making waves, and he has a little bit of clout upstairs. Not much, but just enough to be annoying. You guys need to proceed under the assumption that everything you do will be second-guessed by some Monday morning quarterback.
