Chapter 59

Back at the motel, we lounged on the balcony for the rest of the afternoon, talking about nothing in particular and enjoying each other’s company. Eventually, the stream worked its magic, and we slept. The slamming of a screen door nearby woke me up, and I looked around. The balcony was in two sections. We were on the lower section, which ended at a retaining wall. The next group of rooms and balcony was several feet higher, and I could hear voices coming from that direction.

I shook Mike gently. “Let’s go inside.”

“Sure.”

We went into our room, I did my thing with the doors and drapes, and we crawled in bed for a while.

After we were up and dressed, Mike said, “You know what, I’ve been eating too much. Let’s go to Mickey D’s and have a salad.”

“Sure,” I said. “We can check our e-mail accounts while we’re at it.”
