I handed him a yellow pad and told him to take notes. It took a lot of web browsing to find what I was looking for. There was no single website that told me everything I needed to know, but finally I had enough pieced together.
“Okay, babe,” I said, “I’m going to pull up a map, and I want you to read me the cities and dates slowly, one by one.”
“Okay.”
Twenty minutes later, I’d pieced it together. I showed him the two maps side by side on a split screen.
“Holy fucking shit,” he said.
“That’s what I said when I woke up.”
There was a sharp rap on the driver’s window. Startled, I looked and saw a uniformed cop standing by the door. I’d been so engrossed in my research that I hadn’t heard the car drive up. Reaching in the computer bag, I found my shield and folder.
I rolled the window down and said, “Good morning, Officer.”
“Sir,” he began, “it’s kind of early to be sitting in this parking lot. They won’t be open until six.”
