“Of course it is, and you don’t want to do anything in haste.”

“How do you handle it on a day-to-day basis?”

“I don’t walk up to every new person I meet and say, ‘Hi, I’m Ben Gay’, nor do I attempt to run and hide. In fact, most of the time, there isn’t any need to even get into the subject. Again, you’ll figure it out as you go along.”

“I feel like I’m back in school.”

“Hardly that, but it will be a learning experience. Do you hang out with any of your co-workers on the team?”

“They’re all married,” he said, “so we pretty much go our separate ways after work. Once in a while, we get together for a beer or something.”

“Are they inquisitive about your love life?”

“Now that you mention it, they’re not. They know I date, but they haven’t been too nosy about it.”

“That’s unusual for cops, especially cops who work closely together.”

“I’ve got a lot to learn,” he said.

“You’ll survive the process—we all do.”
