Chapter 141

Mike took the pad of graph paper he’d bought earlier and created sketches of the yards of all the houses. We went online to the Duval County Property Appraiser’s site to obtain the dimensions of the houses and used the photographs we’d taken to pencil in shrubs that were in place and salvageable.

I also used MapQuest to print directions to Jacksonville that the boys could use when they drove south. It couldn’t get much simpler than following four interstate highways from one to the other, but they were nervous, as was their mother. They assured us that they would have adequate funds for gas and food along the way, but we gave each of them some cash just in case. We found a cell phone outlet in Asheville that was affiliated with our service provider and added a third phone to our contract. We had a local number put on it so Lucinda could call the boys whenever she wanted to without incurring long-distance charges.
