“Well, at least I would prefer that the whole world not know that it happened in my cabin.”

“Let’s talk about it for a minute, Dan,” Bob said.

The phone rang, and I answered.

“You still okay, George?” Captain Bridges said.

“Yes, Sir.”

“I’m in the sheriff’s office, and we’re on the speakerphone.”

“Good evening, Sheriff,” I said.

“You too, Lieutenant,” he said. “I hear you’ve had some fun up there in the mountains.”

“I wouldn’t exactly characterize it as fun, Sir. I just want it to go away with as little fuss as possible.”

“Are the authorities there yet?” the sheriff said.

“Captain Robert Plott of the Waynesville PD is here, and he brought Sheriff Dan Sutton of Haywood County with him.”

“Let us talk to them,” Captain Bridges said.

“Here’s Bob,” I said, and I handed Bob the telephone.

“Hello, Henry,” Bob said. Then he mostly listened.

“Who’s he talking to, Lieutenant?” Sheriff Sutton said.
