Chapter 24

“I’m only going to shoot them if they try to

hurt Derek or Wyn, which I believe they are going to do. It’s

protecting our own.”

“Let’s just bring the guys in and be done

with this,” I said. “Let’s not kill or be killed.”

“This fight began the minute they took you

into shore. If we bring them in, this fight goes to land. That’s

the worst thing that can happen.”

I started to ask him why, but my attention

was drawn to the water. Two sharks were headed straight for Derek

and Wyn. As it was, it looked as if the two sharks would reach

Derek and Wyn on the side, but suddenly Derek and Wyn turned so

that they were facing the sharks and now headed directly toward

them. It looked like the shark equivalent of a game of chicken. I

watched as both pairs of sharks increased their speed. BAM! The

sharks hit each other and then moved past.

“What happened?” I asked Mr. Woodard.

“They’re testing each other. Sharks do that

to see how strong their opponents are.”
