“A place like this probably has a dumbwaiter leading directly to the kitchen.”

“Yeah.”

We heard a knock, and I said, “Someone’s on time.”

“Yeah,” he said. “I’ll get it.”

When he opened the door, both Giuseppe and Luciano were standing in the corridor.

“Just in time,” Marco said. “Breakfast is served.”

He introduced the two men to each other, and the four of us sat down at the table. Good food induces good conversation, and we found out a lot more about Marco’s cousin. We learned a little more about Giuseppe’s background as well. When the generous supply of food was exhausted, we settled down in comfortable chairs with coffee.

“So, cousin,” Marco said, “do you think you’d like to come to work for the Conti group?”

“Yes, I would.”

“I have to ask you a very pointed question. I presume my grandmother will have told you that Dani and I are a couple, and have been for ten years. Does that bother you?”

Luciano burst out laughing.
