Chapter 22

“Mr. Murphy, where were you when this happened?”

“The alarm company called about a possible break-in at Mitch’s house, and I drove him over there,” Rion said. “He unlocked the front door and asked me to wait for the police while he checked the backdoor. I didn’t see anything, but I heard her scream at him.”

“Anything else you can tell us?”

“Yes. While I was attempting to help Mitch, the tenants from the garage apartment talked to me. They said that they’d gone to bed early and the alarm woke them up—they finally looked out a window just in time to see Mitch being stabbed.”

“Yeah,” the lieutenant said. “They identified the attacker as female, but couldn’t see her face.”

“Captain Martin,” I said.

“George, please,” he said.

“Dan Mahoney only gave me your number today. I had no idea I would need it so quickly. Sorry to have gotten you out so late.”

“Don’t worry about it,” he said. “It’s what the taxpayers pay me for. We’ll be in touch.”
