“Oh. Th-thank you, Mr. Mann.” She cradled the bear in her arms as best she could. “The kitchen is through that doorway, past the living room.” She pointed to the right.

“I want to thank you, Ms. Rayne. I’m very sorry you were injured in my house. If there’s anything I can do to help out—”

“Quinn, go make us some lunch.”

He slanted a smile at me. “Yes, Mark.”

“I’m sorry, sir. I managed to get most of the house wired, but before I could hook it up, this happened.” She gestured to her leg.

“Dammit.”

“I’m sorry—” she started to say again.

“Not your fault, Rayne. I’m not in any shape to do the hookup.” I ran a hand through my hair. “Okay, it’s Mann’s house—he should know someone who can deal with this.”

“Yes, sir. Uh… Mr. Vincent? When my leg went through that floorboard…”

“Yeah?”

“I found something.”
