“Very funny. How can I do my job if he doesn’t listen to me?”

“You do an excellent job. Don’t let him worry you.”

“Thanks, Quinn.”

DB tapped his foot impatiently on the floor.

“I can hear that,” Janet said. “You have my sympathy.”

“Thanks.” I removed my finger from the intercom and cut the connection. “Good afternoon, David.”

“Oh, no, don’t give me that.”

“Give you what?”

“Do you think I don’t know you’ve got something up your sleeve when you call me David Brendan?”

“I thought you were in San Francisco for Mother’s Day.”

“Well, we’re back now, aren’t we?”

“I can see that. How did your mother deal with Lyn and Syd?”

“Don’t ask.”

“That doesn’t sound promising.”

“That’s because it nearly wasn’t. She refused to come to the weddings. For about two minutes I thought Lyn and Syd were going to say if Mom didn’t approve then the weddings were off.”
